The costumes. Tonight was my deadline for costume decisions. The kids have spent the last 6 weeks or so telling me, "I'm going to be a unicorn! No! A prince! No! A hula dancer! No!..." After Friday, October 12th, all costume choices are final. "OK, guys. This is it. Gimme your first choice and a backup, in case I can't figure out how to make it."
Nate's easy. Plan A is a skeleton. Bless him. Plan B is a bat, but I won't need to go to Plan B. We have an old velour cat-suit, long since missing its tail. So all I need to do is get some white felt, cut out bones, spend a little time with Mr. Glue Gun, and we're all set. I'll buy him a mask. We have a Grim Reaper-ish hood from a previous Halloween in the dress-up box, so he's all set.
Sara on the other hand...she is passionate about her Plan A - a dragon. Ooof. No plan came immediately to mind. I Googled it and sure enough, there was a pattern for a homemade dragon costume. But check it out!

What!? How about a costume that doesn't require a degree from MIT? Her reluctant Plan B is Hermione Granger. I could do that.... I actually have the right kind of robes, left over from my Oxford days; and a woolly scarf in Gryffindor colors. We would need a wig, is all. I can tell though, that she reeeeally wants to be a dragon. Anybody out there in Blogsville ever made an easy dragon costume? I'd love advice and ideas; or commiseration will also be gratefully accepted. I see a lot of corrugated cardboard in my future.

And, it would never even occur to Liv to ask me to make her a costume. She knows me too well....
She wants to be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz this year. We are lucky. I actually have a blue gingham dress from my childhood that will fit her. And I have some ruby slippers that came with a dress up set for her for Christmas. Her hair is long enough to braid and now, we even have Toto...
I thought I might be able to help, having sewn a good part of my own clothes in my younger days, but the instructions keep coming back to a "download plug-in" page, and I'm pretty sure I have all those plug-ins. Any chance you downloaded the instructions, Kate? Maybe I can help you figure out how to simplify. (I'm assuming you mean the "fire-breathing" as opposed to the "festive ribbon" dragon, right?
BTW, I second Maria's wish to read a blog about your Oxford days.

a deadline for costume decisions -- what a great idea! i went looking for dragon costume patterns, i found mostly paper mache which looked more complicated than the cardboard pattern you found. i have it easy this year -- i better inform the family that today all costume choices are final before anybody changes their mind. :)
A dragon??? I looked and whew! You've definitely got your work cut out for you! She wouldn't be willing to settle for a nice friendly ghost or clown would she? Bless your heart!
I'm lucky, The Boy is 11 and hasn't been trick-or-treating in two years. He realized Momma buys enough Halloween candy to send someone in a diabetic coma and so he no longer bothers to go through the trouble. Needless to say, I didn't argue!
My boy was a dragon last year! But I just had a purchased costume. I didn't make it. It is a fuzzy plush costume that was really cute. I got lucky and found it at a garage sale! I'd send it to you, but I know it is too small as my boy is a bit smaller than Nathan.
This year he wants to be a fireman. This is good because I have all the stuff. Back in the summer I found a really cool, realistic fireman coat. We already have the hat and some rubber black rain boots, so we are good to go! Oh, even have a badge!
