Today's High and Low

Today, my world didn't reach out and grab me. So, I'll tell you about this dumb thing I do at the end of the day before it slides away, unexamined. I make myself think it over and decide on the best moment and worst moment of the day. This isn't easy on a regular day, because the highs aren't very high and the lows aren't very low. That's the challenging part.

Low point for today. Easy! The English as a Second Language program that I run is an evening school, and we use the same classrooms as the children use during the daytime. In between, there are meetings, social services like legal aid, and a whole bunch of other things going on. We've been beating this building into the ground for about 20 years, and it shows. My students have to be careful, because we get blamed when things are messy or broken, whether we were responsible or not. So last week, a team of volunteers came to the school to paint some classrooms and they did the preschool room. At night, I use the preschool as a childcare facility. For reasons I can't really fathom, a volunteer stashed a little plastic bucket full of paint in the play refrigerator and forgot it. So tonight, some little kid opened the toy fridge, reached in and pulled out the paint (which was still pretty liquidy) and spilled it all over the preschool carpet. Then walked in it and walked around a little, looking for help. It was interesting. I have paint in my hair, still. Luckily, we're getting new carpet soon. Also, when I called the executive director to tell her what happened, I got to the part where the kid took the paint out of the fridge, and she thought I was about to tell her that he drank it. She was so relieved that he didn't - she was delighted that he'd just spilled it. Disaster is relative, I guess.

High point. Hmm.... that would have to be running this morning with my new iPod, and realizing that a half-hour had gone by and I hadn't even looked at the clock. I have all of my favorite stuff on there from the CDs in my collection, so now I want new music. If you comment oon this posting, tell me what your latests music addictions are.

I don't think my highs and lows are terribly interesting, and you probably won't either. I'd rather collect some of yours, 'cause I like collecting stuff like that. Tell the best and worst moment of your day. Only two rules: it has to be a day that is basically over, so it might have to be yesterday; and it has to really be a moment, not an hour or something.

Last day of July, 2007
Worst moment: Hearing that the new computer check (at my day job) "wasn't compiling properly", when the benefits program it's checking on opened already.
Best moment: Having one of my favorite students at my night job (who'd just gotten an Honor Student award that night) say "I'm so happy!" and give me a big hug.

Do you see a pattern here?

LOL Kate, are you sure it was a VOLUNTEER that put the paint in the fake refrigerator?

Yesterday's highs: working in the food pantry with my kids. Recalling my family heritage and learning more about it from my mother. Making bread pudding with the kids. Writing and more writing.

Lows: the combination of being tired and bored in the evening. Not knowing what I wanted to do but not having enough energy or drive to do it anyway. I HATE being bored! My friend called and reminded me how lucky we all are, and thanks to her, I snapped out of it and went up to read an interesting book. (ooops...that was another "high" from my friend and from James Patterson.)

Oh yeah. We have been reveling in music from "Phantom of the Opera" for about the last month. My kids love it, and so do I!

Low point: Realizing that getting a traffic ticket means I'm no better than my ex-husband. (This was about my lowest point in years, actually. I kid you not.)
High point: Walking out of the hairdresser's 10 minutes earlier than I expected, because I got there EARLY!

Oh kate,

Yesterday's high point: it was so low i didnt realize there was one!

Yesterday's low: realizing that our next team "leader" is a young guy with virtually NO experience in the office!

hahaha....the paint sounds like a lot of fun actually, I hope it at least matches the carpet!

Let's see about today's highs and lows...
LOW POINT - realizing I was all out of snoozes and had to drag myself out of bed for work
HIGH POINT - realizing I was one tiny piece of attainable information away from proving the new publisher lied about having a college degree
Oh and I'm going to cheat and add a second high point - when I discovered I could get A LOT of land for cheap while researching a possible relocation.

As for music, I have 3 staple CDs that have to stay on my iPod at all times...Tracy Chapman (self-titled I think), County Crows, August and Everything After and Tom Petty's Wildflowers

I wish I had gone for the TEFL or TESL certificate at uni while I had the chance. I'd probably be good at that and it would have made a real change. Typical me though that i didn't do it

My low point yesterday was: realizing that the kitchen at my work was serving egg salad sandwiches for supper.... again!

High Point: At the end of my long 15 hour shift yesterday, I stopped to literally say "good-bye" to a resident who is on comfort cares, and probly will not be with us the next time I work. I leaned in very close to her and said "Bonnie, I am leaving for the night. I want you to know that I love you and you have always been a dear friend". Bonnie turned her head towards me, focused on my face and gently reached up and stroked my cheek. "Thank you" she whispered.
